Automatic Transcription in MaxQda

In this blog article and video, I’m introducing Maxqda’s new automatic transcription tool!

We’ve been waiting for it for a long time, and since MaxQda 2024 there’s now an automatic transcription tool integrated into MaxQda! It’s called MaxQda Transcription, and it’s part of the AI Assist block, so it’s available to all those who agree to use artificial intelligence in their choice of licence.

The first 60 minutes are free, if you want to try it out, and then it works by buying time credits. You can check the prices in your currency on their website, but it’s very, very affordable when you consider the time and the price it takes to transcribe manually!

Now, how to use MaxQda Transcription?

  • Go to your document list and select “Transcribe file”, there are 2 options: manual and automatic.
  • If you select “automatic”, it will open a web page with your Maxqda account. Your account is the same for Teamcloud, AI Assist, and Transcription. All these tools work with the Maxqda Cloud.
  • In your account, on the website, you can upload (import) your audio or video file.
  • Then choose the parameters: the language, and if there are any unusual words, nouns or expressions in your document, you can write them down here: they will be better detected and spelt.
  • Next, start the transcription process. Once the file has been transcribed, you can download it from here.
  • Once downloaded, come back in Maxqda and import it as a transcription file in Maxqda. With a right click on the document, and “Import an existing transcript”.

That’s the procedure for now. I expect it to be simplified in the future, but in any case, it’s going to be all explained in a window when you select “Automatic transcription”.

If you’re happy with the 60-minute trial and want to buy credits, it’s on the same webpage.

To do a transcription with Maxqda Transcription, it takes around 20% of the recording time. So if you have a one-hour recording, it will take about 12 minutes. It’s available in 45 different languages, so plenty of choice!

Of course, like all automatic transcription tools, it’s never a 100% accurate transcription, and you will still have to proofread it. But with Maxqda’s manual transcription tools, proofreading and corrections are still really quick and convenient. And even if it’s not 100% accurate, the fact that you can write any specific vocabulary or unusual words in the transcription setting windows, it really helps. There’s also pretty good detection of accents.

In the video, I’m showing you some examples, one with a light accent and a good recording quality, and one with a strong accent and a really bad recording quality. As you can see in the video, it’s quite impressive!
